Dietary Needs of a Pregnant Woman

 Pregnant women require a nutritious and healthy diet for the proper growth of the baby. Most doctors would highly recommend that pregnant women take a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements every day in addition to eating a healthy diet. By taking a supplement, this ensures that you and your baby get enough and sufficient nutrients. However pregnant women should avoid taking excess supplements as these would have a drastic effect on them and the baby.

Caffeine

Pregnant women should avoid caffeine at all times although some people would argue that taking it in small quantities is not harmful but  there are others that show that caffeine intake may be related to miscarriages. They should also tend to avoid caffeine especially during the first trimester to minimize the likelihood of a miscarriage.

Alcohol

Alcohol might have very drastic effects on the baby during pregnancy. There is no amount of alcohol intake that is considered to be safe during pregnancy hence should be avoided at all times for the sake of the unborn baby. Prenatal exposure to alcohol may have an effect on the development of the baby and other disorders. Even after birth their mothers should avoid alcohol as long as they are breast feeding their infants. Exposure of alcohol to an infant poses harmful risks.

Smoked Seafood

Pregnant mothers should shun refrigerated and smoked seafood at all times. It should be avoided because it could be contaminated with listeria which could have immense effects on an unborn infant during pregnancy. Canned or shelf-safe smoked seafood is usually safe for consumption.

Fish exposed to Industrial Pollutants

Though it might be difficult to know this when purchasing the fish pregnant mother should avoid fish from contaminated lakes and rivers that may be exposed to high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, hence this is for those who fish in local lakes and streams which include bluefish, pike, trout, and walleye etc.

Raw Shellfish

Under-cooked shellfish may have an adverse effect and hence pregnant mothers should try and avoid it since it may lead to illness. These include oysters and clams. While cooking helps prevent some types of infection, it doesn’t prevent the algae-related infections that are associated with red tides. Raw shellfish pose a concern for everybody, and they should be avoided altogether during pregnancy.

Raw Eggs

Raw eggs should be avoided because of the potential exposure to salmonella which could be harmful.

Unpasteurized Milk

Unpasteurized milk may contain listeria which is essentially harmful hence pregnant mothers should make sure that any milk they drink is pasteurized.
